Juliette Wells Bio
Of all Austen’s novels, Northanger Abbey had the most complex journey from composition to publication. Dr. Wells will enliven your understanding of this novel’s origins via a guided tour of pertinent primary sources (in digital facsimile), including letters between Austen and her publishers. An added bonus to the lecture will include stories of the American collectors who owned important documents.

Juliette Wells is the Elizabeth Conolly Todd Distinguished Professor of English at Goucher College in Baltimore, Maryland, home of the distinguished Alberta H. and Henry G. Burke Jane Austen Collection. Dr. Wells is the author of two histories of Jane Austen’s readers: Reading Austen in America (2017) and Everybody’s Jane: Austen in the Popular Imagination (2011), both published by Bloomsbury Academic. For Penguin Classics, she created 200th-anniversary annotated editions of Persuasion (2017) and Emma (2015). Dr. Wells has also published more than 25 scholarly articles and book chapters on women writers ranging from Austen to Agatha Christie. A frequent breakout speaker at JASNA AGMs, Dr. Wells was a plenary speaker at the 2016 AGM in Washington, D.C. She has presented lectures for the annual conference of the Jane Austen Society of Australia and at Jane Austen’s House Museum in Chawton. She serves on the editorial board of Persuasions and is finishing a term on the national board of JASNA.
