“Let us venture into the sleeping chamber of an 1830s lady of leisure, just at the hour when she wakes from her slumbers to explore her wardrobe for the day.”

Women’s dresses at this period featured the infamous gigot sleeve, one of the widest in the history of women’s fashion. Matching the breadth of the sleeves was the span of the ornately decorated hat that framed the face of the fashionable lady of the period. She wore elaborate silk evening gowns with matching pleated fabric hats with plumes. Her day dress was almost as fancy, but with long sleeves. Read full story here.
