In Regency England in the aftermath of the French Revolution, no one wanted to appear to be a member of the French aristocracy. People began using clothing more as a form of individual expression . . . than an indication of social status. Women’s fashions followed classical ideals, and tightly laced corsets were temporarily abandoned in favor of a high-waisted, natural figure (Wikipedia). While the fashions changed, the rituals around courtship and marriage remained strictly proscribed. Opportunities for unmarried women without pensions such as Austen were few.
