Jane Austen Day 2014

Jane Austen Day 2014 in Philadelphia on Saturday, April 26, 2014, sponsored by the Eastern Pennsylvania Region of JASNA. This year’s day-long event entitled The Unfinished Jane Austen will be a fascinating exploration of Austen’s two unfinished novels, The Watsons and Sanditon, and a provocative discussion of what Austen might have accomplished if she had lived a longer life.

An illustrious panel of Austen scholars will be presenting during Jane Austen Day.

Dr. Jocelyn Harris is emeita professor of the University of Otago, New Zealand and has written and lectured widely on Austen and her contemporaries. She is the author of Jane Austen’s Art of Memory and most recently, A Revolution Almost Beyond Expression: Jane Austen’s Persuasion. At Jane Austen Day, Professor Harris will present, “The Million Dollar Manuscript: or, Love, Luck and Money in The Watsons.”

Dr. Janine Barchas is Professor of English and teaches Jane Austen at the University of Texas, Austin. She is the author of the award-winning, Graphic Design, Print Culture and the Eighteenth-Century Novel and Matters of Fact in Jane Austen: History and Culture, which has just been released in paperback. At Jane Austen Day, Professor Barchas will present, “Spa Package: Sanditon and Regency Advertising.”

Dr. Michael Gamer is Associate Professor of English at the University of Pennsylvania where he teaches literature of the British Romantic period. This semester he is teaching “Jane Austen and Adaptation.” He is the author of Romanticism and the Gothic and some thirty scholarly articles. At Jane Austen Day, Professor Gamer will present, “Had Jane Lived and Henry Died, and Other Fantasies.”

Jane Austen Day will be held in the exquisite Grant Room at Philadelphia’s historic Union League and include complimentary morning tea and coffee, a delicious luncheon, selected merchants including a bookseller, and an abundance of good discussion and fellowship.
