Regency Woman Wednesday – Princess Charlotte of Wales

Princess Charlotte August of Wales (January 7, 1796 – November 6, 1817)

Princess Charlotte was the only child of Prinny and his wife, Caroline of Brunswick. Since her parent’s relationship was rocky at best, she was raised mostly by governesses and servants. She had brief interactions with her mother before Caroline left the country. She defied her father on his choice of husband and was happily married for a little over a year before her death due to childbirth.

Those of you who joined us for a presentation by Tim Bullamore remember him mentioning how big a deal Charlotte’s death was at the time.  Charlotte’s death set off tremendous mourning among the British, who had seen her as a sign of hope and a contrast both to her unpopular father and to her grandfather, whom they deemed mad.
