You Are What You Eat: Especially If You’re Austen!

Join JASNA-NJ for a very special virtual event!

From Jane Austen’s Kitchen: Martha Lloyd’s Household Book

Martha Lloyd was a lifelong friend of Jane Austen and lived at Chawton Cottage during the author’s most productive literary years. Martha’s recipe book reads like a Who’s Who of Jane’s life, with named contributions from her family members and close friends. Handwritten during a period of over thirty years, Martha’s collection captures nearly two hundred culinary recipes and home remedies, including the white soup mentioned in Pride and Prejudice and Jane Austen’s favorites—toasted cheese and mead.

Join author and food historian Julienne Gehrer for a detailed look at Martha’s Lloyd’s Household Book, an extraordinary artifact described as “a kitchen window” into the daily life Martha shared with Jane, her sister Cassandra and their mother. Julienne has presented at numerous AGMs, served on JASNA’s Board, and coordinated the 2018 AGM. Her articles have appeared in Persuasions and Texas Studies in Literature and Language. Her books include Dining with Jane Austen and Martha Lloyd’s Household Book: The Original Manuscript from Jane Austen’s Kitchen, Bodleian Library, University of Oxford.

The event takes place over Zoom, and all are welcome! Foodies, Janeites, come one and all!

Register here for the 2pm EST February 19th event.

It will be a wonderful way to celebrate a long Valentine’s Day of favorite foods and beverages. Though hopefully no one in attendance will be mourning being spurned by a callous rake.

Does she care for olives?
