Austen declared Emma Woodhouse to be “a heroine whom no one but myself will much like,” and while the meddling heroine remains controversial, many critics consider it her masterpiece, though Austen worried, “I am very strongly haunted by the idea that to those Readers who have preferred P&P. it will appear inferior in Wit, & to those who have preferred MP. very inferior in good Sense.”
